“You’re staring at my fingers. Would you like me to tell you the little story of right-hand/left-hand? The story of good and evil?
H-A-T-E! It was with this left hand that old brother Cain struck the blow that laid his brother low. L-O-V-E! You see these fingers, dear hearts? These fingers has veins that run straight to the soul of man. The right hand, friends, the hand of love. Now watch, and I’ll show you the story of life. Those fingers, dear hearts, is always a-warring and a-tugging, one against the other.”

In his best-selling novels The Kite Runner (2003) and A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007), author Khaled Hosseini sets his stories across several tumultuous decades, reflecting the changes in Afghanistan, the country of his birth. But reading about the challenges there — the lingering effects of Taliban rule, the devastation caused by war, the plight of refugees returning to their country only to find their homes reduced to rubble — cannot compare to experiencing them first-hand, as Hosseini himself discovered in 2003, when he visited Afghanistan for the first time in 27 years.
In this gallery, Hosseini shares his memories from his trips to Afghanistan, explains the work that must be done, and how you can help.

View Larger A couple of months ago, I posted this to find out if anyone heard anything about Night Catches Us soundtrack … As quiet as kept, there is still no “official” soundtrack perse’ but for those who may have fallen in love with those melodic tunes that I found of-so-refreshing then check this out …
“Especially worthy of recognition is the movie’s phenomenal soundtrack, an amazing collection of funk, soul, gospel, and blues tunes (plus a score composed and performed by The Roots) that form the sonic landscape of film’s Philadelphia circa 1976. The only problem is, as is often the case with small indie films like “Night Catches Us,” there is no actual soundtrack album. From a business perspective, this makes perfect sense: soundtrack buyers are moviegoers and, unfortunately, not a lot of moviegoers saw “Night Catches Us” in theaters (according to Box Office Mojo, the film grossed less than $100,000 domestically). From a cinephile perspective, this is an outrage. “Night Catches Us” had one of the coolest soundtracks of any movie of 2010. If only there was a way to own it.
So here’s what I did. I took the soundtrack listing at the end of the film’s credits then made a Ping Playlist in iTunes WHICH YOU CAN FIND AT THIS LINK featuring every song that was available. It ended up being only 13 out of 22 listed tracks, but that’s better than nothing, and it’s still a pretty outstanding playlist of music, with songs by El Michel’s Affair, Darondo, Cool Sounds, Joe Medwick, and Epitaph. Seriously: check it out. Until Apple creates some kind of kick-back system I’m not making any money on this thing; I just did this in the hopes of spreading the word about this fine film and sparking some interest in more indie film soundtracks. If you’re curious but iTunes allergic, here’s my playlist followed by the rest of the “Night Catches Us” songs that aren’t available through Apple:
